Web design in Geneva

I am an independent web developer based in Annemasse, on the edge of the canton. I design, build and look after websites for Geneva businesses, professional practices and non-profits, with one person to deal with from the quote to the maintenance.

Why work with a French-based developer when you are in Geneva

Geneva is a dense and demanding market: law and consulting practices, independent practitioners, shops in the centre, restaurants, associations and international organisations. All of them need a website, and most of the quotes they receive come from agencies built for corporate budgets.

I work from Annemasse, on the other side of the border. Same daily life, same customers, same commute — but a different cost structure. In practice: you get a website designed and hand-coded, with one person to deal with who actually answers, for a budget that bears no relation to a Rive Droite agency.

Proximity here is not just a matter of kilometres. It is the same catchment area and the same market: I know your customers, your competitors and how people look for a provider here. And you know where to find me after launch — which is not always true of a provider found online.

One thing worth knowing: a service invoiced by a French freelancer to a Swiss company counts as an export of services, and the VAT rules differ from those applying to a French client. We cover it at the quote stage, with figures, and you check it with your fiduciary.

Who for

The Geneva projects I work on

Three profiles come up most often on the Geneva side. They are not the only ones, but they are the ones where I know exactly what to build.

Independents and professional practices

Lawyer, therapist, architect, consultant, coach: your website is your business card and often the first contact. It has to inspire confidence in five seconds, say precisely what you do, and let someone book an appointment without a three-page form.

Shops and restaurants

Current menu, exact opening hours, directions, booking. A Geneva restaurant gets searched for at midday, on a phone, in the street. If the menu is a PDF that takes eight seconds to open, the next customer is already next door.

Associations and NGOs

Geneva has an unusual concentration of associations and international organisations. Their websites need to be bilingual, accessible, easy to update by volunteers who change, and able to take a donation without losing the donor along the way.

Ranking in Geneva: what is different here

Local SEO in Geneva follows the same principles as anywhere else, but three local specifics change the picture — and they are routinely ignored.

People search in two languages

A large share of the Geneva population searches in English. “lawyer geneva”, “physiotherapist geneva”, “web design geneva”: these are real queries with real volume, and often less contested than their French equivalents. A French-only website deliberately cuts itself off from part of its market. That is exactly why this site also exists in French.

Your Google Business Profile matters more than your site

On a local search, the block of three businesses with the map sits above the ordinary results. Appearing in it depends first on your profile: exact category, verified address, real opening hours, recent photos, and reviews. A perfect website with an empty profile stays below the map, which means below the fold. That is the first job, before the site itself.

Swiss directories still count

  • local.ch and search.ch are still used directly by the Swiss public, and Google uses them to cross-check your contact details.
  • Your details must be strictly identical everywhere — same street spelling, same phone number format. Three directories that disagree and Google no longer knows which version is right.
  • A .ch domain is not required to rank in Switzerland: a properly configured .com works perfectly well. A .ch reassures a local audience — it is an argument about trust rather than about ranking.

Frequently asked

What Geneva clients ask me

No — it is common practice across the Geneva basin: the work is done remotely, by phone and video call. Administratively it is a cross-border supply of services, a thoroughly established arrangement. The quote states the currency, the payment method and the VAT treatment. Have your fiduciary check it: that is their job, and it costs nothing.

No. Google relies on the location declared in your Google Business Profile, on the page content and on local signals, not on the domain extension. A .ch does carry genuine reassurance with a Swiss audience, and nothing stops you registering both and pointing one at the other. It is a branding decision, not a ranking one.

It depends who you want to reach. For a tradesperson working with the immediate neighbourhood, French is enough. For a practice, a shop in the centre or an organisation aiming at the international community, an English version opens up a whole market — provided it is a real translation with its own hreflang tags, and not a button wired to a machine translator, which Google ignores and English readers spot within one sentence.

Elsewhere in the region

I also work all around.

Annemasse sits at the centre of the basin. I cover the French Genevois, the Chablais, the Arve valley, Annecy and the canton of Geneva.
